Why Social Media Bans for Kids Are Turning Into a Global Policy Wave

 For a long time, the politics of child safety online stayed comfortably vague. Governments issued warnings, schools promoted media literacy, and platforms promised better tools. But the underlying assumption remained the same: parents were supposed to manage the problem at home.

That assumption is now breaking.

On April 9, 2026, Greece unveiled plans for a total social media ban for children 15 and under, with enforcement aimed at the platforms themselves. The important shift is not just that more countries are restricting minors’ access. It is that regulators are moving from advice to liability.

That sounds subtle, but it changes everything. Once the burden moves to platforms, the debate is no longer about whether parents should monitor screen time more carefully. It becomes a question of product governance. How do companies verify age? How do they design around addiction? How much responsibility should a platform carry when a product aimed at maximizing engagement is used by children?

This is why the current wave matters. It is not merely moral panic in legal form. It is a structural challenge to the business model of social media. Engagement-heavy systems depend on frictionless access, weak age gates, and design patterns that keep users scrolling. Rules aimed at minors force companies to introduce friction into exactly the places where they have spent years removing it.

There are, of course, real objections. Age verification can become a privacy problem. Overbroad restrictions can block legitimate speech, social connection, or educational use. Critics are right to worry that governments may solve one risk by expanding another. A world where every user must prove their age through increasingly invasive systems is not obviously a better internet.

But that counterargument now faces a political reality of its own: the status quo no longer looks defensible. For platforms, the lesson is straightforward: treating minors as a small edge case is no longer viable. For parents, the lesson is harder: regulation may help, but it will not eliminate the need for judgment, boundaries, and trust at home. The state can force companies to build safer systems. It cannot outsource parenting.

Still, a line has clearly been crossed. The conversation is no longer whether social media might harm children. It is who must bear the cost of acting as if that harm is real.
