SCI-FI WEB NOVEL · FINALE Second Chance — The Human Side EP.08 — The Sky
Second Chance — The Human Side
EP.08 — The Sky
"You look up and there's nothing above you.
That's all it is."
SCENE 01
Boarding
The day Rocky decided to board the Second Chance, Cole cleared part of his own quarters.
Nobody asked him to. He did it himself — opened an adjacent cargo bay to make room for a 29-atmosphere pressurized chamber. Rivera helped with design, Nowak linked medical monitors. A space where Rocky could live for the 25-year return. Rocky's new home. Right next to Cole's former section.
Separated by a bulkhead — the man who brought weapons for humanity, and the alien who came to save it. Wall to wall.
Shin
"Cole. Why did you give up your quarters?"
Cole
"I owe a debt."
Nothing more. A soldier's apology. Not in words but in action.
No torpor this time. Rocky's aged body couldn't survive it — no Eridian hibernation equipment on a human ship. So: an awake voyage. Twenty-five years. Crew rotating in pairs, two always conscious to communicate with Rocky and operate the ship.
First rotation: Shin and Cole.

SCENE 02
Conversations Through the Bulkhead
First rotation. Four months.
Shin talked to Rocky through the bulkhead every day. At first it was science — thermostat optimization, solar application parameters. But over time, the conversations changed.
Shin
"Rocky. What did Grace miss most on Erid?"
Rocky (translated)
"Sky."
Rocky (translated)
"Erid has no sky. 29-atmosphere air too thick. Grace sometimes said 'I miss the sky.' Did not understand at first. I have no eyes. Cannot understand sky."
Rocky (translated)
"Still do not understand. But — I know Grace missed it. I know it was important to Grace. Things I cannot understand can still be important. Grace taught me this too."
Shin thought about that for a long time. Things I cannot understand can still be important. Perhaps this was what Cole needed to hear too. Cole feared what he couldn't understand — unknown beings, unknown technologies, unknown outcomes. But not understanding doesn't require fear. You can respect what you don't understand. The way Rocky respects Grace's sky without ever seeing it.
✦ ✦ ✦
Second rotation. Sophia and Hassan.
Sophia read Grace's diary to Rocky every day. Not the research — the personal entries. Sophia reading, Rocky listening. One human, one Eridian, remembering the same person together.
Rocky (translated)
"Remember that day. Grace laughed. Remember the sound-wave pattern."
Sophia cried. Reading an uncle she can't remember's diary to his friend. A strange situation. But strange doesn't mean wrong.
✦ ✦ ✦
Third rotation. Cole and Nowak.
Nowak found Cole standing before the bulkhead in the first week.
Nowak
"Were you talking to Rocky?"
Cole
"...Explaining."
Nowak
"What?"
Cole
"War. What humans have done to each other. Why I brought weapons. Why I contaminated the fuel. I felt I could be honest with Rocky."
Nowak
"What did Rocky say?"
Cole
"He said 'understand.' That Eridians have conflict too. Different kind, but still. And then — 'Grace was often wrong too. But tried again. Cole can try again too.'"
Nowak said nothing. A doctor doesn't judge. A doctor observes. What Nowak observed: a soldier confessing to an alien. And the alien being a better confessor than any priest — because it offered understanding without judgment.

SCENE 03
The Sky
Year 24. Final rotation. Shin and Sophia.
The Sun was becoming visible. Still a small dot, but brighter than the other stars. A light that said: home.
Rocky's condition was visibly declining. Nowak's data showed joint wear nearing critical. Two of five legs nearly nonfunctional. Even his sound waves were weakening.
Shin went to the bulkhead every day anyway. Rocky came every day too. Both knew. Not much time left.
One day, Shin asked.
Shin
"Rocky. Want me to explain what sky is?"
Rocky (translated)
"Grace tried to explain too. Failed. I have no eyes."
Shin
"Let me try differently."
Shin thought. How do you explain sky to a being that cannot see? That doesn't know color or horizon or the concept of thin atmosphere?
Shin
"Rocky. Sky is — you look up and there's nothing above you."
Rocky (translated)
"Up I know. Opposite of gravity direction."
Shin
"Right. Look in that direction and on Earth — there's no end. No ceiling. The atmosphere is thin enough that light scatters, and that makes color. Blue during the day. Sunlight hitting atmospheric molecules, only short wavelengths scatter."
Rocky (translated)
"Rayleigh scattering. Inversely proportional to wavelength. This I know."
Shin
"You know the physics. But sky isn't just physics. It's looking up and feeling that there's no end. No ceiling above me. Open infinitely upward. That feeling is sky."
Rocky was silent for a long time. Eridian silence is darkness. But this was a thinking darkness.
Rocky (translated)
"Eridians have no such thing. Look up, 29 atmospheres. All directions have walls."
Rocky (translated)
"Grace had — a direction without walls. That is sky. That is what Grace missed."
Rocky (translated)
"Understand now. Not completely. But — a little."
Shin
"A little is enough. A little is plenty."

SCENE 04 / EPILOGUE
Second Chance
Year 25. Solar system entry.
Earth through the window. Blue dot. The blue dot they'd left 50 years ago. Growing larger.
All six awake on the bridge. Hassan cried. Rivera cried. Nowak — the Polish doctor who seemed like he'd never cry — wiped his eyes. Sophia wasn't crying. She was smiling. Cole stood at attention. Saluting. To whom — probably even Cole didn't know.
Shin stood before the bulkhead.
Shin
"Rocky. We're here. Earth. Grace's planet."
Rocky (translated)
"Feel the Sun. Warm. Bigger and hotter than Erid's 40 Eridani."
Shin
"This is the star Grace was born under. He grew up in this starlight. Under the sky this light makes."
Rocky (translated)
"...Will save this star. Grace's star. With stellar thermostat."
Shin
"Together."
Rocky (translated)
"Together."
From Earth orbit, comms came. Voices from Earth, heard for the first time in 50 years. Mission control in disbelief — a ship that left half a century ago had returned. Carrying an Eridian.
Shin transmitted:
Cole approached. Everyone tensed slightly. But Cole's face was different now — not vigilance but something new beneath the fatigue of 25 years of bulkhead conversations.
Cole
"Captain. When we release the thermostat technology to Earth — I have a proposal."
Shin
"Go ahead."
Cole
"Three-species joint governance. Humanity must not manage this technology alone. Eridians and Tauians jointly monitor and co-decide its use. I can't trust humanity by itself. But the three together — maybe that works."
Shin looked at Cole. For a long time. This was the answer Cole had arrived at. He couldn't trust humanity. But a larger structure that includes humanity — he could try trusting. An imperfect answer. But one that the old Cole would never have offered.
Shin
"...That's a good proposal, Cole."
Sophia came to the window.
Sophia
"Captain. I think we should change the portrait in the memorial."
Shin
"To what?"
Sophia
"Not a hero in a spacesuit. A teacher standing at a chalkboard."
Shin smiled. Exactly right. Grace was not a hero. He was a terrified science teacher. And that was better than a hero.
Through the bulkhead, Rocky's sound waves came — weak now, but clear. The translator delivered his last words of the episode.
Rocky (translated)
"Shin Hyunseo. Show me sky. Question."
Shin laughed. And cried. At the same time. Humans are a strange species. They can laugh and cry at once.
Shin
"I will, Rocky. Grace's sky."
Outside the observation lounge, Earth turned slowly. A blue planet. A planet with sky. Still under a sick star, still an imperfect species, still an unfinished story.
But now — not alone.
⟡
— End —
This story began with two questions: "What is a hero?" and "Can humanity be trusted?" Grace was not a hero — he was a terrified teacher. That was better. Humans build weapons, but also schools. Cole couldn't trust humanity alone, but learned from Rocky that you don't have to trust alone — you can trust together.
Rocky's Voyage and Second Chance are two sides of the same coin. Rocky's story is "Is problem. Solve." The human story is "The problem was us." Read together, they form one complete picture.
